Title: AEBR 2018/199 - Fish and invertebrate bycatch and discards in New Zealand arrow squid and scampi trawl fisheries from 2002–03 until 2015–16
AEBR-2018-199-Bycatch-and-discards-Squid-and-Scampi.pdf (10.9 MB)
This report summarises bycatch and discards of fish and invertebrates in New Zealand arrow squid and scampi trawl fisheries for 2002–03 to 2015–16, based on analysis of fisheries observer and commercial catch effort data. Barracouta, silver warehou, and spiny dogfish were the main bycatch species in the arrow squid fishery, with total annual bycatch of 9000–40000 t and discards of 1000–16000 t. Javelinfish, other rattails, and sea perch were the main bycatch species in the scampi fishery, with total annual bycatch of 2400–5600 t and discards of 900–4100 t.

Title: Stock Assessment of arrow squid (SQU 1T and 6T).
FAR-2016-28-SQUID-Stock-Assessment.pdf (15.2 MB)
A De Lury depletion model was fitted using observer length frequency data and commercial catch and effort data for the Auckland Islands and Snares areas in the 1990¬¬-2014 fishing years. Each season and area was modelled separately, mimicking real-time to test suitability for in-season management. The models failed to converge for several seasons for both areas.

Title: A preliminary evaluation of depletion modelling to assess New Zealand squid stocks.
FAR-2016-25-Squid-Depletion-Modelling.pdf (3.9 MB)
A De Lury depletion model was fitted using observer length frequency data and commercial catch and effort data from the Auckland Islands area in the 2008 fishing year. The model fitted the data well, however, estimated depletion was sensitive to the assumed value of natural mortality.

Title: Necropsy of marine mammals captured in New Zealand fisheries in the 2007-08 fishing year
AEBR_34.pdf (5.5 MB)
Confirmation of species and sex, as well as description of morphometric characteristics, age class, stomach contents, reproductive status, and entrapment-related pathology are described for five New Zealand sea lions (Phocarctos hookeri) and one fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) returned from the SQU6T fishery in the 2007-08 fishing season. All were caught between 28 February and 26 April 2008. Two adult male New Zealand sea lions were also returned from the Southern blue whiting fishery, one caught in September 2007 (SB08-06Ph) and one in September 2008 (SB08-10Ph).

Title: Warp strike in New Zealand trawl fisheries, 2004-05 to 2006-07
AEBR_33.pdf (286.7 kb)
In this report, a summary is presented of all the strike data collected from 2004–05 to 2006–07. The analysis provides an overview of the strike data and an indication of the main trends. During this period a total of 12 097 strike observations were made. Most observations (58.8%) were made in the squid trawl fishery, with some also being carried out in hoki (16.9%) and other trawl fisheries.

Title: Evaluating methods for estimating the incidental capture of New Zealand sea lions
AEBR_15.pdf (4.5 MB)
In order to reduce sea lion capture, sea lion exclusion devices (or SLEDs) were introduced into the fishery in 2000. Since 2004 they have been used on most tows. The use of SLEDs has reduced the number of sea lions seen by observers, and consequently the estimation problem has become more difficult. The performance of the estimators is compared under assumed levels of SLED coverage, ranging from 10% to 90%.

Title: Incidental capture of New Zealand fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri) in commercial fisheries in New Zealand waters, 2003–04 and 2004–05
AEBR_14.pdf (16.1 MB)
The specific objective for this work under Objective 1 of ENV2005/02 is: to examine the nature and extent of the captures of marine mammals in New Zealand fisheries, for the whole New Zealand EEZ, by Fishery Management Area and fishing season, and by smaller metric as appropriate for the fishing year 2004105. This objective was extended to cover the 2003-04 fishing year because these data had not been collated or reported on.

Title: Estimation of incidental captures of New Zealand sea lions (Phocarctos hookeri) in New Zealand fisheries in 2004–05, with particular reference to the SQU 6T squid trawl fishery
AEBR_12.pdf (7.0 MB)
This work presents the data and results of model-based estimation of New Zealand sea lion captures in the SQU 6T squid fishery. Captures reported by observers in other trawl fisheries during 2004--05 are documented at the end of the report. This report is essentially an update of Smith & Baird (2007), to cover sea lion incidents in New Zealand fisheries in the 2004-05 fishing year.
